Searchers Table

Knots are typically the least desirable characteristic found in a piece of wood. A knot will often reduce the value and usefulness of a piece of wood and in some cases even reduce its structural integrity. This table surrenders to its imperfections to give the work its natural and unspoiled voice. Much like the psychological shadow, the knot has the unique potential to generate character and give meaning to what might otherwise be dismissed as troublesome or simply ignored. The imperfections in the walnut slab underpinned aesthetic decisions and were used as a guide for exploiting precision milling technology. The table is also inspired by the remarkable setting of the classic western film by John Ford called Searchers. Shot in Monument Valley in 1956, the title points to the films narrative which follows the unrelenting quest for a missing child. At the same time, the title also points to a more subtle inner quest undertaken by Ethan Edwards (Johns Wayne’s character) as he journeys into his soul, and perhaps even the soul of a society torn by unending cycles of violence and hatred.

Today technology drives, fascinates, frustrates and obsesses contemporary life. Most people would agree it is the great rising tide that in many ways connects all of us. Meanwhile empathy attracts little overt interest or attention, though it too undoubtably has always offered immeasurable benefits to individuals and society. While both technology and empathy play key roles within human enterprise, the potential of marrying their seemingly opposite characteristics rarely is discussed. In this age of digital expansion, environmental degradation and a widening gap between rich and poor the need for dialogue between technology and empathy deserves attention. This table is a meditation on the potential for an alchemical marriage between these two great forces. The table was inspired by a deep love of wood and a deep respect for the earth which uniquely holds the possiblity of solitude and healing.
